Description of the excursion to the Yusupov Palace.

The Yusupov Palace once belonging to the noble family of the Princes of Yusupov is one of the most beautiful palaces in St. Petersburg. The Princes Yusupov had always been in the centre of St Petersburg high life and the wonderful balls and masquerades which were regularly held at the palace amazed high society of the time with their luxury and refinement.

The Yusupov Palace retains its genuine interiors from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and motifs of various styles have been used to decorate the halls and chambers. The influence of the art of different countries can be traced in the Turkish study, the Oak dining-room, the musical chambers and the chamber of Henry II. The true gem of the palace is the exotic Moresque chamber and the luxurious decorations of the interiors just dazzle with murals, carvings, marble, mirrors, gilded chandeliers, expensive silk clothes and refined furniture.

The palace is worth visiting not only as it is one of the best architectural monuments of the palatial architecture of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, but also because of its historical significance. The cellar of the palace was the setting for the murder of one of the most scandalous figures in Russian history - Grigory Rasputin. The legendary favourite of the wife of Emperor Nicolas II, Rasputin convinced the royal family that he possessed supernatural powers and that only he could cure the heir to the throne Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia. Rasputin had a strong influence on the Tsar and Tsarina, as well as their decisions and politics. Nowadays the cellar where the dramatic events took place houses the exhibition “Grigory Rasputin: pages of his life and death.” You will be able see the wax figures of Rasputin and the plotters, as well as other interesting exhibits.

Refined luxury, the splendor of the high life, human relationships and the history of a rich aristocratic family are all present at the Yusupov Palace, one of the most mysterious places in St. Petersburg.
